Space Design - Bhavani Island

Outdoor Space

Landscape Design

The following is a space design project done for a site on Bhavani Island, an island situated in Krishna River, Vijayawada. The island is a public space, accessible by ferry, and offers many recreational activities and water sports to visitors.

This project was done in collaboration with two of my batchmates - Sai Gayathri Krishnan and Meera Narayankar.
The brief was to choose a site on the island and come up with a suitable space design intervention for the chosen site.

The site chosen by us is an open green stretch of land with a direct view and access to the water. It is surrounded by spots such as an amphitheatre, a restaurant, play areas and public seating spaces, which witness a lot of activity and hustle bustle. In comparison to its surroundings, our site is relatively quiet and peaceful with limited seating and no designated activities.

After gaining a sense of what attributes best describe the general character of the space, we chose to further enhance these attributes of the space through some design interventions.

After several sounds of brainstorming and ideation, we came up with a proposal that emphasises the 'Pause, Privacy and Waterscape' that make up the character of the chosen site.

The proposal consists of an elevated mound with stone platforms on one side which serve as steps and seating, as well as a brick jaali facade-like structure which can add to the sense of privacy experienced in that space and also create an interesting play of light and shadow.
